M.L. King QB Jonquel Dawson takes aim at DeKalb County passing record

The DeKalb County career passing mark of 4,614 yards set by Peachtree’s Todd Rampley from 1981-83 is just 57 yards out of the grasp of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Jonquel Dawson as the Lions enter the Class AAAAA state playoffs this Friday.
The 7-3 Lions host 5-5 Harrison at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston and Dawson could have the record before the first quarter ends if the air attack clicks like it has been all season.
Dawson, a junior, stands at 4,558 yards on the season which is just 19 yards out of second held by Avondale’s Charles Dudish from 1964-67 at 4,577. Entering the 2010 season Dawson had just 1,772 yards passing, but has piled up a DeKalb County single season best in yards with 2,786 and 34 touchdowns. His 154 completions is third behind Southwest DeKalb’s Eric Jones with 203 (1983) and Mike Brinkley of Druid Hills with 168 (185).
Jones had held the single season yardage mark until last week’s 252 yard performance by Dawson in the 26-24 win over previously undefeated Stephenson and Brinkley’s mark of 30 touchdowns fell to Dawson two weeks ago.
Dawson’s attack on the record books has been aided by senior receiver Demarco Robinson’s performance this season. Robinson has eclipsed Druid Hills’ Rodney Lane’s record of 15 receiving touchdowns in a single season with 21 heading into Friday’s game.
Robinson can break the single season yardage record for DeKalb County this week as he enters just 71 yards behind Lakeside’s Dick Conn who had 1,326 receiving yards in 1968. Robinson is currently second on the list with 1,255 receiving yards. He is tied for sixth on the single season receptions list with Stone Mountain’s Charles Reeves (2006) and Lithonia’s Kelvin Kight (1998) with 56 on the season.
He has also climbed into 8th all-time on the career receiving list with 1,689 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Johnathan McCrary has moved into third on the single season passing yardage charts with 2,604 yards trailing just Dawson (2,786) and Southwest DeKalb’s Eric Jones (2,671). He is tied for third in passing touchdowns in a single season with 23 along with Jones and trailing Dawson (34) and Brinkley (30).
